lyrics

Every year between
November the first and December 19
One of my more considerate gentile friends messages me
And says…

Happy Chanukah, is it Chanukah?
I never know cause 8 days seems quite long
Also is it Hanukah or Chanukah?
I don’t know how to spell it sorry if I spelt it wrong

Chanukah, how do you spell it in English, no one knows

Every year between November the 10th and December 23
I read a message from a considerate gentile friend and then I say back to them

Oh that’s right it's Chanukah thank you for reminding me
I haven’t quite been keeping up with Torah scroll
But now I know it’s Chanukah I’m gonna go out and get myself a delicious jelly roll

Jelly roll, Chanukah! Jam donut, chocolate coins,
dreidel game, candles… I think that’s pretty much it

And you’re probably wondering why
We light 8 candles for 8 nights
And there’s a simple explanation for all that we do
Every tradition that exists for a Jew
Is to...

Remember that things were bad
Remember how we were sad
NEVER FORGET that things were bad
But there not quite as bad as they were before
At least for now

But we’re celebrating that things aren’t bad anymore
But it’s likely we’ll be sad again
So let’s keep having fun, but just keep in mind at any moment everything could easily TURN TO SHIT

Every year between September the 5th and April 16
I think about all the Sunday school teachers who I was a pain in the ass to, and I say…

Happy Chanukah, this is Chanukah the festival of forgiving all sins
Ok, I know that’s not true, I’ll try to be a better jew
I’ll start by only eating fish with scales and fins

Scales and fins, I think that’s what makes a fish kosher
But I’m not quite sure

And this is the
SEVENTH
Most important jewish holiday of the year
Maybe
It’s not clear
Cause Rabbi’s disagree with each other all the time
And I can’t read minds
But one thing we can agree on is that we must all...

Remember that things were bad
Remember how we were sad
NEVER FORGET
And everything you eat represents an emotion you’re supposed to feel
And you’re supposed to feel sad

Every year it’s said
Precisely on the 25th of Kislev
All your jewish friends around the world light the first candle and they say...

Happy Chanukah, happy Chanukah
I ask my inner-cynic to step aside
Maybe there is something to this celebration
People having hope and lighting lights

I don’t know what I believe
I don’t think that it matters
All that matters is how you live your life
So when your life is filled with darkness
Let me light this candle just for you
And let it burn for more than 8 long nights!
And...

Remember when we were glad?
Remember the joy we had?
NEVER FORGET that things aren’t always bad
So you might as well enjoy every moment that
Life is good

(Sometimes things can get bad, sometimes things get real sad
Sometimes things are bad, you might feel quite sad)

(It's not your fault you don't know how to be a happy person, you can blame it on your parent's trauma)
